It’s time to put away the Timex and Swatch.
The ability to accessorise well shows that you are a man who pays attention to details. Your main accessory should be your watch.
A good watch draws attention.
To make sure that it’s the right sort of attention, get a discreet looking one.
Your date will find her eye drawn to it. You might be talking facing each other. At some point in the conversation, her eyes will glance over to your watch. Don’t let it be a digital Casio from the 80s. It might be ironic or nostalgic but it won’t be projecting the perception that you want.
The perception that we’re looking for is the same as we have been aiming for in this entire blog. We want to be recognised that we understand style and that we are stylish men. We want to look good and be attractive to the world, whether that be in dating or in the workplace. We want people to not notice your watch and accessories immediately, but after a few minutes and then be intrigued and then to nod to themselves internally that you are a stylish man with good taste.
If you’re sceptical that women really care about watches and other accessories, think about accessories on them. The absence of any jewellery or makeup is unusual and is a detail that most men would pick up on and this would raise questions of its own such as ‘Why not?’ Badly applied makeup and garish jewellery gives you pause for thought, whilst tastefully applied makeup and elegant accessories make you smile and think you’re with a classy woman who knows how to dress. Why then should your accessorising be any different? It isn’t shallow and it doesn’t mean that she’s only interested in your money. It shows you have good taste. It’s true that good watches can cost a fortune but they don’t have too. There is an entry-level threshold of around £200.
Essential tips on buying a mens watch
Don’t buy a fashion watch made by a fashion house such as Armani or Dior.
We’re looking for a watch made by a proper watchmaker.
Swiss is the benchmark for watches.
For a great looking Swiss watch that doesn’t cost the earth, check out Tissot.

Get a leather strap. It’s too easy to buy an over the top metal bracelet that goes against the understated style we’re looking for. Choose a leather strap in black or very dark brown.
Choose a simple design. Either a chronograph or a clean minimal design. You don’t want a bling watch. Bling marks you out as someone who wants to look ‘rich’ but isn’t or as someone who is rich but has little taste. Neither is a good look. Think of it like aftershave or fragrance. The best is something that smells elegant and intriguing. You want her to smell more and lean in for a second time to smell it again. You don’t want a huge in-your-face bordering on offensive aftershave where nobody wants a second smell.
The metal casing should be in silver or gold. Of the two, I’d lean towards silver because gold can be hard to match with clothes. Also, gold is a little out of fashion at the moment. Whilst we don’t much worry about ‘fashion’ in this book, gold watches tend to be seen on older men.
Choose a watch that is versatile. A watch is a decent investment. They are quite expensive so you want one that you are able to wear for different occasions. Therefore, whilst dress watches are beautiful and great for formal occasions, they’re not versatile because you couldn’t wear it with sportswear or with summer clothes on holiday. Equally, sporty watches don’t look great with suits. The key then, when we’re looking for a watch that can straddle all occasions is the right balance between sporty and dress watches: an elegant sports watch or a robust, scratch-resistant, water-resistant dress watch.
Choose a watch that you love. This point can’t be emphasised enough. You will be the one looking at it many times a day. It should be a design that you love and gives you pleasure whenever you’re looking at it. You don’t want to ‘kind of like’ your watch as this will slowly descend into resentment and another shopping trip. Scan watch websites for a half an hour and you’ll soon see a few that you love and that satisfy the above criteria.
