A reader asked me a question last week. “What is the proper response to your barber asking if you want your eyebrows done?” I’d say “Hell no!” Unless….. The default position For most men, there’s no need at all to have anything done to your eyebrows. Don’t get them trimmed, plucked or threaded. ESPECIALLY don’t pluck them. This elicits an ‘eww’ reaction from women. You don’t want them to look sculpted and unnatural There’s nothing more unmanly than looking too over groomed. You might think that’s an odd thing to say for a blog about improving your appearance. But we’re looking for a manly appearance. You want to look like you’ve made an effort but you don’t want to look like you’ve tried too hard. That’s the tightrope we must walk. Overgrooming is feminine. It’s okay for women (to a point), but for men it’s a no-no. It makes you …[Read More]
One new pair of sneakers is never enough. In the hot summer months, you need to rotate them to avoid your sneakers becoming a sweaty mess. I was looking at ASOS for some inspiration and found these beauties! (Adidas Originals Court Vantage) What do I love about them? I love the detailing, with the perforated uppers. I like the blue contrasting laces. They’re not too outlandish. They’re classic, with something a little bit different. Check these out: Of course, wear them with invisible socks. Let me know in the comments what sneakers you’re wearing this summer!
Forget Brexit for a bit and focus your mind on a slightly more fun dilemma. The horns of this dilemma are: Sneakers look better with NO socks. Period. But no socks with sneakers mean sweaty, then smelly feet. What is a man to do? You might think “Ed, what about those pop socks? Those white sports socks?” Good try but those still poke above the tops of your sneakers. And that little bit of sock fabric just take the edge off your outfit. However, instead of resigning myself to a smelly, summer sneaker sweat-fest, I chanced on a solution. In H&M (who are covering themselves in glory at the moment), I found these ‘invisible’ socks. What am I talking about I hear you ask? These socks are sooooo low that they need silicon in the back of the heel to keep them up! At only £1.99 for a pair, I …[Read More]
I needed some new sneakers for a recent trip to Morocco. I had my heart set on a pair of Vans slip ons. (That’s how I shop. I have an idea before I go out shopping, which often leads to disappointment) I popped down to my local mall on the morning we were due to fly out and they were quite expensive. And also not the colour or style that I wanted. Vans are around £50. I then dashed into H&M and they did some classic Converse-style white plimsolls for the incredible price of £14.99. £14.99! At that price, it was a no-brainer. It was the price more than anything. I couldn’t believe that they could look so classic and be so cheap. I snapped them up and wore them on the plane to Marrakech. Here they are on the way out: Here they are after 11 days in the …[Read More]
Every man’s jacket (suit or blazer) needs a pocket square. Without it, your jacket just looks unfinished. I want to show you how to do a pocket square, the easiest way and the way that I do it. Check out the video above to learn more.
Eliminate these mistakes from your wardrobe arsenal and you’ll be well on your way to dressing better. I see these errors all the time. See if you can spot these next time you’re out and about. 1. Wearing overt brands Why do so many men think that dressing well means buying brands and having those brands plastered all over them? You’re just a free advertisement for the brand. You’ve even paid them for the privilege of advertising their brand. Ralph’s little horse is a long-standing example of this. Why would you want to associate yourself with this? Are you a polo player? Is Ralph paying you to wear this? Do you think it makes you classy and preppy? Have some more self-respect. You’re better than this. Superdry is a recent case in point. It’s a huge logo on their average jackets and t-shirts. What’s going through the heads of people …[Read More]
I’m always amazed by how few men make use of something which is so simple yet provides such incredible value and benefits. All other things being equal (same intelligence, same wit, same self-discipline, same physical attributes), a man who looks good, who dresses better, grooms himself well and walks tall with a warm smile and strong eye contact will do better in all aspects of his life. The list of benefits below add up to almost a superpower. Why don’t more men make use of this? Maybe they don’t realise that it’s worth so much to them. Maybe they think it’s shallow. Whatever the reason, this attitude is so misguided and costs men so much. Check out the list below: Benefit 1: There’s a pay premium attached to looking good. Simply put, people who look good get paid more. Recent studies show that the pay premium is 4%. In other …[Read More]
Last night, I saw Casino Royale for probably the seventh time. Such a good movie. There’s a scene in particular that encapsulates everything that we’re trying to achieve here at www.howtobedapper.com. Bond comes into the bathroom where Vesper is doing her makeup. They are preparing for the big high-stakes poker tournament. The stakes are high in monetary terms but also sky-high in terms of intelligence in the fight against terrorism. Bond presents Vesper with a dress, explaining that he wants her to look fabulous so that when she walks into the room, the other players are distracted by her beauty and glamour. There’s certainly unsaid reasons such as she’d raise his own status and his opponents would treat him with greater respect for having such a woman on his arm. As he himself goes to change for the evening, he notices a suit on his bed. He strides incredulously back …[Read More]
