Do you ever think about the first impression you give? I’m guessing not very often. Maybe you might think about it for a first date or a job interview. Most of the time though, I bet you never think about it. You might be thinking right now ‘Ed, why does it matter? Shouldn’t people be caring more about substance? Shouldn’t we NOT judge a book by its cover?’ We shouldn’t do…….but the cold, hard reality is……….we do. Come on. Admit it. You judge on first impressions. We all do. Look around you on your daily commute. People in your coffee shop. On your your lunch break. Who’s making a strong impression on you? Who’s stood out as someone who you’ve noticed, in a positive way? Who’ve you noticed in a negative way? You’re judging everyone you see whether you know it or not. Let’s embrace reality Scrap that comment above about it …[Read More]
It’s an oft-quoted cliche in dressing better that fit is king. As so often with cliches, it contains more than a kernal of truth, but it’s so often said, that it loses its meaning. As I’ve said many times in this blog, it’s the little details that mark you out as stylish. It’s the little details that other stylish men notice. (Check out this previous post about what style is). Most advice will say that the trousers should slightly break on the shoe. I.e. they should rest on on the top of the shoe and there’ll be enough fabric that there’ll be a soft break in it. This is particularly 1940s and 1950s and Mad Men-type length of trousers. In 2016, I think this is too long. So how long should my trousers be? I think the hem of your trousers should finish slightly higher. So when you’re standing, the hem …[Read More]
A reader asked me a question last week. “What is the proper response to your barber asking if you want your eyebrows done?” I’d say “Hell no!” Unless….. The default position For most men, there’s no need at all to have anything done to your eyebrows. Don’t get them trimmed, plucked or threaded. ESPECIALLY don’t pluck them. This elicits an ‘eww’ reaction from women. You don’t want them to look sculpted and unnatural There’s nothing more unmanly than looking too over groomed. You might think that’s an odd thing to say for a blog about improving your appearance. But we’re looking for a manly appearance. You want to look like you’ve made an effort but you don’t want to look like you’ve tried too hard. That’s the tightrope we must walk. Overgrooming is feminine. It’s okay for women (to a point), but for men it’s a no-no. It makes you …[Read More]
One new pair of sneakers is never enough. In the hot summer months, you need to rotate them to avoid your sneakers becoming a sweaty mess. I was looking at ASOS for some inspiration and found these beauties! (Adidas Originals Court Vantage) What do I love about them? I love the detailing, with the perforated uppers. I like the blue contrasting laces. They’re not too outlandish. They’re classic, with something a little bit different. Check these out: Of course, wear them with invisible socks. Let me know in the comments what sneakers you’re wearing this summer!
Forget Brexit for a bit and focus your mind on a slightly more fun dilemma. The horns of this dilemma are: Sneakers look better with NO socks. Period. But no socks with sneakers mean sweaty, then smelly feet. What is a man to do? You might think “Ed, what about those pop socks? Those white sports socks?” Good try but those still poke above the tops of your sneakers. And that little bit of sock fabric just take the edge off your outfit. However, instead of resigning myself to a smelly, summer sneaker sweat-fest, I chanced on a solution. In H&M (who are covering themselves in glory at the moment), I found these ‘invisible’ socks. What am I talking about I hear you ask? These socks are sooooo low that they need silicon in the back of the heel to keep them up! At only £1.99 for a pair, I …[Read More]
I needed some new sneakers for a recent trip to Morocco. I had my heart set on a pair of Vans slip ons. (That’s how I shop. I have an idea before I go out shopping, which often leads to disappointment) I popped down to my local mall on the morning we were due to fly out and they were quite expensive. And also not the colour or style that I wanted. Vans are around £50. I then dashed into H&M and they did some classic Converse-style white plimsolls for the incredible price of £14.99. £14.99! At that price, it was a no-brainer. It was the price more than anything. I couldn’t believe that they could look so classic and be so cheap. I snapped them up and wore them on the plane to Marrakech. Here they are on the way out: Here they are after 11 days in the …[Read More]
